After the Chicago Marathon was cancelled due to the pandemic, I designed my own DIY marathon and raised $10,000 for the YWCA Evanston/Northshore, working to eliminate racism and empower women. I’m not a runner, though. I’m a competitive walker — something I never imagined I’d be. After my story was shared by The Daily Northwestern, an editor from Runner’s World reached out and asked me to write a story about how competitive walking plays a role in my life and how I’ve used it to combat racism.
